James R. Wendland, 82, ascended peacefully into heaven on July 18, 2012 on the last bead of the fifth sorrowful mystery of the rosary with his niece Anne Marie (Witchger) Hansen by his side at Kindred Hospital in Beaver, PA. The son of Martin & Helen (Webster) Wendland, James was born on August 4, 1929 in Bay City, Michigan and spent much of his life in New York City.
He was predeceased by his dear friend Martin Hirsch of New York, New York; his brother, Martin Wendland; and his sister Betty Ann (Wendland) Witchger. He is survived by his brother Andrew (Barb Babcock) Wendland of Bay City; MI, his sister-in-law, Shirley Wendland of Bay City, MI as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
James graduated from Central High School in Bay City in 1947. He was drafted in the Korean War and afterwards moved to New York City where he spent the rest of his life. He worked for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. In his later years he and Marty loved to visit with extended family members in New York and around the country.
Known as “Jimmy” and “Uncle JR” to his nieces and nephews, he was a kind and humble man who loved to cook, listen to classical music, and enjoy the shows on Broadway. He spent his last month of life surrounded by his grand-nieces and grand-nephews in Beaver, PA.
James will be dearly missed by his friends and especially by his nieces and nephews and their spouses and children including: the children of the late Betty Ann Witchger: Bob & Brenda (Bonner) Witchger of Cary NC; Anne Marie (Witchger) & John Hansen of Beaver, PA; John & Maria Teresa Gaston Witchger of Omaha, NB; Mary Louise (Witchger) & Jeff Schreiber of Murrieta, CA; Gerry & Sue (Ruhlig) Witchger of Saginaw, MI; Joe & Michelle (McMillan) Witchger of Edina MN; Steve & Ann (Gerstacker) Witchger of Saginaw, MI; Beth Anne (Witchger) & John Lechman of Houston TX; Andrew & Janet (Burke) Witchger of Shea Laurel on world tour; Matthew Witchger of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; and Teresa (Witchger) & Phil Serier of Saginaw, MI. He will also be missed by the three daughters of he late Martin E. Wendland and Shirley (Norman) Wendland: Amy (Mark) Jezak, of Eustis, FL; Laury (Gene R.) Mindykowski of Bay City, MI; and Mary Margaret (Meg) Wendland of Bay City, MI. He will also be missed by the three daughters of of Andrew W. and Barbara B. Wendland: Ann W. Pinney of Venice, FL. Judith W. (Kevin J.) Nixon of West Windsor, N.J. and Margaret (Bart) Nixon of South Haven, MI.
Honoring Mr. Wendland wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral Liturgy will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2711 Mackinaw, Saginaw, Michigan. Rev. Fr. James Heller will officiate with burial of cremains at 2:30 p.m. in Old St. Patrick Cemetery, Bay City, Michigan. Friends may call at St. Stephen Catholic Church on Monday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass. A Vigil Service will take place 6:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, James R.
